How to get to Glastonbury

Glastonbury is 135 miles (217 km) from London, 134 miles (215 km) from Birmingham, 73 miles (117 km) from Cardiff and 27 miles (43 km) south of Bristol.

Air

The nearest airport is Bristol Airport (BRS) which is 23 miles or 41 minutes by road from Glastonbury town centre.

From Bristol Airport you can hire a car, take a taxi or complete the journey to Glastonbury by bus.

  • Bus – The bus journey involves 2 buses and takes at least 1 hour 49 minutes total journey time. WWW: Bristol Airport

Train

The nearest train station to Glastonbury is Castle Cary which is 14 miles or 24 minutes by road from Glastonbury town centre.

Two lines run through Castle Cary:

  • Heart of Wessex Line – Bristol Temple Meads -> Weymouth Quay
  • Reading to Taunton Line – London Paddington (Great Western Main Line) -> Taunton

The fastest journey time from London Paddington to Castle Cary is 1 hour 32 minutes.

If you wish to complete your journey from Castle Cary station to Glastonbury by bus, it involves 2 or 3 buses and will take at least 1 hour 9 minutes total journey time. The journey by public transport is lengthy for such a short distance and completing the journey by taxi is a better option.

From Castle Cary station you can take a taxi from one of the taxi operators that operate at or around the station:

If your journey to Glastonbury includes a train, you may come via Bristol Temple Meads station and the quickest way from here is via the 376 Mendip Xplorer bus to Glastonbury. The fastest journey time from London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads is 1 hour 19 minutes.

Coach

If you plan to travel to Glastonbury by coach there are two coach operators to choose from:

  • National Express – London Victoria Coach Station – WWW: National Express
  • Berrys Coaches – London Hammersmith Bus Station – WWW: Berrys Coaches

Car

Glastonbury is just over 14 miles (23 km) from Junction 22 and 13 miles (21 km) from Junction 23 of the M5. The route from Junction 22 is a back road and is twisting and lumpy in places and sometimes flooded! so if you are coming from the North and prefer to stick to A roads continue South to Junction 23 to pick up the A39.

Two A roads pass through Glastonbury – A39 and A361. If you are coming to Glastonbury via the A303 (from London and the South-East) Glastonbury is just over 10 miles (16 km) from Podimore roundabout.

If you are driving from the London area, traffic permitting the fastest route is usually M25, M3, A303, A37.

When travelling to Glastonbury by car the fastest route will vary depending depending on the variable traffic conditions. Glastonbury Car Parks

From London Heathrow Airport

From Heathrow Airport you have the following options to get to Glastonbury:

  • Car hire
  • Taxi – As above, prearranging a local company that does airport transfers may be cheaper than using a taxi from the airport
  • Public Transport – The journey from Heathrow Airport to Glastonbury involves 2 or 3 trains plus 1 or 2 buses and a total journey time of at least 3 hours 51 minutes. The quickest route is via Bristol Temple Meads station and from here via the 376 Mendip Xplorer bus to Glastonbury.

From Gatwick Airport

As with Heathrow above, car hire and taxi are available options and probably more appealing than the torturous journey on public transport which will take you at least 4 1/2 hours with lots of permutations involving train, underground and bus journeys. From Stansted Airport

The journey from Stansted Airport to Glastonbury involves several changes and a total journey time of at least 5 hours 17 minutes. Use the Traveline Journey Planner (link below) to plan your journey to/from Stansted.

From Eurostar

If you travel on foot via the Eurostar, the onward journey from St Pancras International and Glastonbury will involve several changes and the route will vary dependent on the day and time of your arrival but will take at least 3 hours 40 minutes total journey time.
